The Cavern Beatles, Theatre Royal, Windsor
27th February 2005
Just got back from seeing the Cavern Beatles in Windsor. That was a lot of fun.
They mainly played early stuff, from Please Please Me and With the Beatles up to Help! and it was great to hear a lot of songs that I haven't heard other tribute bands do recently.
It was hard not to turn up with a lot of preconceptions having seen the Bootleg Beatles so many times in recent weeks, but I went with an open mind and no real idea what to expect -- I didn't even know whether they were the type of tribute band who tries to meticulously reproduce the sound or whether they were a little more relaxed and freeform. They were definitely going for the former and on the whole, doing it extremely well. If anything they were trying a little too hard -- some of the mannerisms and idiosyncrasies were rather forced -- but their John was great and George's spoken links sounded so much like George himself that it was scary.
Michelle was too bouncy. 'John' seemed to be having trouble keeping his guitar in key and had to keep faffing with the tuning. Sometimes it felt just a little bit "churned out". But overall it was a cracking good set and I can't wait to see them again -- hopefully at a more friendly venue than the Theare Royal.
